Air Navigation Pro Pilot Hightlight: Dimitris Ververelis

Last month, we met Dimitris Ververelis, a 50 year old professional helicopter pilot, flight instructor and examiner based in Greece. He works as a corporate helicopter pilot and gives flight instructions at Dekeleia Aeroclub based in Tatoi Air Force base, close to Athens.

What do you love the most about flying a helicopter?

I like everything! The freedom, the feeling, the smell of kerosene, the wind, the cloud, the sounds! But the most that I like is the interaction between the pilot and the helicopter. I always say that flying is like dancing, you have to understand your partner and always think of steps in advance. You have to guide her with respect, and she will impress you. If she happens to stumble, you will need your skills and knowledge to hold her.

What's you favorite aircraft?

My favorite is the BO105 but i have a favorite for each kind of work. I had a great time with the Bell 430 while working on VIP flights, I enjoy giving flight instructions on the Robinson r44 and I am in love with the EC120 for the comfort of flying and endurance. In total, I must confess that nothing can compare to the hovering feeling of a Bell helicopter.

What is your favorite destination so far?

The next one! I don't know which one it will be...

What's your dream travel destination?

I am living my dream in every flight. I never really cared for the destination. I fly because I am in love with the flight itself!

How did you come across Air Navigation Pro?

From the very beginning. I got in touch with Johann to help in any means. From that day, this great app became the most valuable tool for flight. I continue to provide Air Navigation Pro with updates for Greece via Greek Helicopters.

What are the 5 best things that you like about our app?

1. Stability and no "bugs", I only remember a couple of problems, only in the first years and they were immediately fixed.
2. Accuracy
3. Availability of data, charts, maps etc. for every country
4. User friendly interface
5. Sharing of flight in real time and traffic awareness

Have you tried other navigating apps? How do you find these apps in comparison? If you haven't what made you stick to Air Navigation Pro?

I have tried and I always get informed of new apps. Some of them are great like SkyDemon but I am an Apple enthusiast. I very much like Apple's "human interface" and Air Navigation Pro follows its guidance giving the user a very friendly and familiar operation environment.

There are so many people and companies involved by providing information to the platform that you can find the data you want, for almost every part of the world.

Last but not the least, all aviation navigation apps other than Air Navigation Pro are not helicopter friendly. Helicopters don't operate to and from airports only and we have specific needs well noted and served by Air Navigation Pro app. For Greece, a small country with lack of aviation data and aviation publications including maps and charts, the app is the absolute solution.

The team behind Air Navigation Pro always listens to their users and is ready to adapt new ideas and they're innovative. The support is immediate and helpful.

If you could talk to non-users about our product, what would you tell them?

Air Navigation Pro has changed the way we prepare our flights and the way we navigate. It is the most valuable thing in the cockpit after the compass and the traditional map.

As a corporate pilot, I remember I was always carrying a bag full of maps, handbooks, regulations and notes so I could be ready to plan a flight when asked. Now I have everything in my iPad and with Air Navigation Pro, it is so easy to create a plan and then follow it while airborn.

What do you do when you're not flying?

Refueling for the next flight or skydiving.

What do you see yourself doing three years from now?

To perform in Europe. In 2013, I started presenting helobatic flight displays in Greek Airshows, Vostok Europe was our valuable sponsor at the time. Wizard Helobatics team was born one year after. I hope we will be able to have our own BO105 helicopter to go to the next level.

What is your favorite memory?

Sunset "Cloud surfing", of course!

What would you tell non-pilots about the joy of flying?

I was all well said by Leonard Da Vinci: "Una volta cheabbiate consciuto it volo, camminerete sulla terra guardando il cielo, perché là siete stati e là desidererete tornare" (For once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been there, you will long to return.)
